Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
