An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
